The chocolate museum collection

600 m2 exhibition space

The permanent exhibition shows the history of cocoa and its arrival in the city, the industrial evolution, and the boom in the creation of artistic figures with chocolate.

The 600 m2 exhibition shows the evolution from the first cocoa beans to the spread and popularization of chocolate in Europe, from the food of the gods and the high aristocracy to the spread and popularization throughout the planet and for all audiences.

A history of significant importance in Barcelona and Catalonia, from the first cocoa paste workshops in the 16th century to the great Barcelona chocolate factories of the 19th century and their link with Catalan modernism.

The history of chocolate in Barcelona stands out, especially for the artistic work that began in the 20th century with the improvement and innovation in the techniques for shaping and molding chocolate.

Since the 1930s, expert chocolatiers such as Lluís Santapau, Joan Giner, Jaume Sábat, and Antoni Escribá have incorporated artistic knowledge into their pastry work. At the same time, the Easter cake, in the form of a chocolate figure, reaches all Catalan homes.

This history is embodied in a collection of chocolate figures in the museum, including recent figures like the Elephant with which Lluc Crusellas won the award for the best chocolate maker at the World Chocolate Masters 2022.
